Time:  8:00am – 3:00pm

Who: Students entering 6th – 9th grades in the Fall of 2019 from any school, public, private or international. There is an application process and candidates need to have recommendations from a teacher (or parent for home-school students) and a non-parent adult.

How Much:  Full day STEM-X is $390 per week. Half day STEM is $220 per week. Tuition includes lunch and course materials.

Morning 8:00am – 11:15am

Robots are working everywhere and making the world better. Automation, design, maintenance and controlling robots is an exploding field! Get on board the robotics train with Next Step Robotics where you will grow your basic understanding of robot design, control/programming, and function. Some experience with robotics is recommended.

Who isn’t interested in the connection between science and toys?! Race balloon rockets, build a boomerang, and lay siege to a castle with your own catapult. Get energized and dizzy during this hands-on class while you learn the science of how our favorite toys engage people every day.

Learn the basics for developing Virtual Reality (VR) games and experiences in this instructor-led workshop. Explore VR design concepts and video game development tools for creating virtual environments. Participants create roomscale VR experiences using the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. Walk away with the knowledge to begin creating VR content!

Have you ever dreamed of getting in the left seat of a Boeing 787 with your captain’s epaulettes on your shoulders and taking off on runway 36L?  Or maybe you have the ‘right stuff’ and want to join NASA as a commander. It all starts with basic flight training and this course is designed to give an introduction to becoming a pilot using a personal computer-based flight training device. The class will take a field trip to a local airport. This class will be a lot of hard, fun, focused work.

This hands-on course will introduce students to the principles of aeronautical engineering.  During the course, students will design and build a Model Rocket, calibrate it on a test firing apparatus, and use the data to relate position, velocity, and acceleration.  Students will then predict the trajectory of their rocket and fire them to test their predictions.  This course is open to model rocket beginners and enthusiasts alike.

The story of food is AMAZING! Join us as we explore different aspects of agriculture through the lens of food. We will explore animal care, what plants need to grow, as well as how to make ice cream in a bag.

Do you want to be a vet? Do you love to work with animals? Then this is the class for you! To learn what veterinarians do every day we will take field trips to local facilities, investigate the different branches and career options in vet science, and meet local veterinarians. We will even learn to do a physical examination on a dog! If you are a pet lover or a future veterinarian of any kind, join Vet Science!

Be the composer driving the beat, deciding the sounds, and creating the music.  Join this STEM music composition class and create your very own musical masterpiece in the style you choose.  We will use a variety of web-based programs to explore composition ideas.  Using digital composition students can produce professional scores with many playback options.  Bring the creativity and we’ll make music.

What would you do if you were in the wilderness and something went wrong? Would you have the skills to help yourself and others survive? Come learn all about the basics of emergency medicine in an outdoor setting. In this class, you will learn vital skills such as emergency first aid, making litters (to transport people) as well as basic survival skills.

Design an easy to construct underwater robot that will be able to accomplish tasks remotely; you won’t even have to get wet! (but you will).

Create your own bottle rocket, fire extinguisher and hot or cold packs using common household chemicals, learn to manipulate some amazing polymers, experiment safely with dry ice and liquid nitrogen, and much more… No prior knowledge of chemistry is required.

This class is an “out of this world” opportunity for young women to learn about women in STEM careers. As a field trip-based course, participants will visit and even work with local female professionals from medicine, technology, veterinary science, environmental science, and much more. We can’t see them, but they’re all around us. On us. In us! Microbes – think bacteria, fungi, and all the tiny living things – are a part of our lives in so many ways. Over the course of the week, we’ll grow microbes from our own skin, phones, and shoes. We’ll learn how to use a microscope to get a look at the microscopic world. We’ll use microbes to make – and then eat – our own food. We’ll investigate food and medical mysteries caused by microbes. Finally, we’ll visit a fermentation business and learn about real life microbiology happening right here in Fort Collins!

Students will build a model fountain nozzle, visit local fountain features, and learn how to mathematically describe the path of the water. Be ready to get wet and get smart! The fountain nozzle will be a take-home item that can be used for a back-yard fountain, water fights, etc.!

Creating, and Modding: Minecraft is the ultimate creative sandbox. We will use MinecraftEDU to demonstrate how teams can create amazing virtual worlds. We’ll explore some interactive features that make your Minecraft world fun for everyone and learn about modding so you can create your own special Minecraft blocks, characters, and behaviors. Even if you are new to Minecraft, come explore with us!

Can horses talk? Sure, if you know their language! Students will learn the ins and outs of caring for horses. We will discuss how to properly feed horses to keep them healthy, safe handling skills, and identify different breeds.

Oceanography: Exploring Underwater Worlds:

June 10-14, 2019

We are very excited to be able to offer a week-long STEM-X Camp devoted to Oceanography! This camp will be a full day – full week camp.  This camp will focus on marine mammals as a starting place for learning about the oceans. Emphasis in this week-long class will be on learning through inquiry about the ecology and human dimensions of ocean science by exploring marine mammal biology. Marine mammals (such as dolphins and whales) are large, charismatic animals whose study is very popular with students of all ages. They also are a great jumping off point for learning about the marine world and how humans are influenced by it and in turn influence it. Course content will be delivered in a combination of student research of questions posed by both the students and instructors; hands-on activities; instructor-led discussions; and computer-based exercises.  An overnight field trip to the Denver Aquarium is included (CHAPERONES/DRIVERS WILL BE NEEDED).

Balsa Violin!

2 Week – Morning Only Camp: June 10-14/17-21, 2019

Are you interested in making music or MAKING INSTRUMENTS? Balsa Violin is a morning only two-week course where students will actually learn how to MAKE a working violin using traditional violin making tools and balsa wood building techniques. The primary activity will be making the body of the instrument with external bracing and some components. The fingerboard and strings will be pre-manufactured, the neck will be sculpted from a solid piece of maple. Students will be able to keep their Balsa Wood Violin at the end of the camp.

Join us for 2-wheeled adventures in our community! We will take our bikes and learn to navigate the amazing trail system in and around Fort Collins while heading off to climbing, bouldering, exploring and kayaking adventures. You’ll need to bring your bike, helmet, water bottle and sense of adventure.

You asked for it! Welding is now available as an option for this year’s STEM-x. The process we use will be MIG welding and will take place in a PSD welding shop. Participants must be safety minded and able to carefully follow all instructions and guidelines. This class will be hosted at Fort Collins High School.
