Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes in the world of Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Response? This STEM academy class takes you there. You will have the opportunity to interact with the men and women who provide emergency response to our community and hear about the varied career opportunities in the emergency services field. You will tour an ambulance and view a demonstration of basic lifesaving techniques presented by paramedics. You will hear from Poudre firefighters about emergency preparedness, fire prevention, and home safety audits and have the opportunity to discover the intricacies of a fire truck. In the law enforcement part of the class you will interact with K-9 police dogs, learn forensic fingerprint and DNA collection techniques, visit with SWAT officers, explore the “Bearcat”, and acquire community safety techniques. Join us for this fast paced, hand-on exploration of the world of emergency services.

Do you love science experiments? Do you love to eat? In Kitchen Magic we will do both! In this STEM Institutes class we will explore science and math through the world of cooking. We will investigate chemical reactions, properties of matter, measurement, and volume through experiments in the kitchen. We will be learning real-world applications of science and math as well as creating products that we can eat! No prior experience in the kitchen needed. Join us for a hands-on week of fun as we make connections between cooking, baking, science, and math.

Have you ever wanted to create your own world?! Work with your friends on a team, and get more done in less time. Build your own zoo, aquarium, library, museum, race track, amusement park, greenhouse, school, or even shopping mall complete with fashion and jewelry stores! Working together as a team, students will decide on a concept, make a plan for building, and then execute the creation of their own world inside of MinecraftEDU. No previous experience with Minecraft is required. Newbies will learn, and experts will be challenged. We look forward to using mods that make coding, robotics, and agriculture available. Students will practice their digital citizenship inside a closed MinecraftEDU server, open only to program participants.

Are you an animal lover? Want to learn more about how raptors hunt and capture prey and what it is they eat? Are you interested in learning more about how zoo enclosures are planned and built? Have you ever been behind the scenes at a veterinary office? Want to get to know some cool therapy animals? Join our animal adventure and pursue your love of animals.

What if I asked you to meet a movie star, a POW (prisoner of war) who won the Dicken Medal for Gallantry, a wild Alaskan wolf who befriended a Labrador Retriever, a co-pilot who flew missions with the Royal Air Force and received a Medal of Honor, a police officer, a guide, a comforter who travels the world and visits those who are hurting? And what if I told you all of them are canines? Come learn about one of the most amazing animals of our planet. Dogs and humans share a bond that is profound and irreplaceable. You will also learn how to care for our amazing friends by visiting top veterinarians in their fields and learn about the specialties of veterinary science. Come meet dogs of the past, and also see live dogs in action!

This class will explore the many features of Adobe PhotoShop, allowing students to imagine, design, and create pieces of digital art. The skills you learn can apply to computer science, graphic design, photography, or fine art. Come and join the fun!”

In this class, you will meet Dr. Mat Aldredge, a researcher and biologist for the Apex predators of Colorado.  He will teach us about bears and mountain lions.  You will meet Kate from CSU’s Zoology and Shelter Animal program.  Did you know tigers and snakes can be clicker trained?
Did you know our shelters are working with homeless pets who have a hard time establishing eye contact with potential owners?  They are training this targeted group so we as humans understand what wonderful pets they can be.  You will see a wolf and understand the complexity and beauty of this amazing species.  Wolves have families and actually live in many ways similar to humans. You will ride therapy horses at the CSU Equestrian Center and learn how this magnificent animal shows compassion and gentleness.  You will meet a professional horse trainer and see her horses.  You will see birds of prey and learn about their majesty and how they live.  Did you know many species listen to the birds?  They learn their calls, watch them carefully, and respond to what they are saying, which includes an alert to predators, specific humans they may know (or not) in the area, all is okay, or time to go!  Dr. Mary Jean Currier will teach us about her life living with lions in Africa, and raising mountain lions for CSU.  This is just a sampling — we have much more!  You won’t see the world the same after this class.
